In this article, we will look at the main causes of basement flooding and what you can do to prevent a flooded basement.

Poor Weatherproofing

If you live in an area that is prone to accumulating water, your basement floors and walls must be sealed during the construction or remodeling process to avoid water leakage and flooding. If the sealant is not applied correctly or has deteriorated over time, water will begin to seep into your basement through hairline cracks when the water table rises. If your basement floods only after heavy rains, you may have to reseal your basement to prevent flooding.

Broken Sump Pump

A sump pump is a device that removes water that accumulates in a water-collecting basin in the basement or a crawlspace. When water enters your basement and accumulates in the water-collecting basin, say, after a rainstorm or a plumbing malfunction, the device will activate and pump the water out of the basin. A sump pump can fail as a result of old age, improper installation, motor issues, the wrong size, frozen discharge lines, and more. If a sump pump fails and water enters your basement, the space will end up being flooded because the device won’t be able to pump the water out of the pit.

Improperly Installed Downspouts

Downspouts are designed to collect water from the gutters and safely channel it away from your foundation and towards a designated area. They should extend a minimum of five feet away from the house. If your downspouts become clogged or broken, rainwater will pool next to your home’s foundation and seep into the basement over time. To prevent this, ensure your gutters are clear of debris and that they’re in tip-top shape.

Plumbing Leaks

A leaky pipe running through your basement can result in a flooded basement. Plumbing pipes can leak because of broken seals, damaged pipe joints, aging pipes, incorrect pipe laying, and corrosion. Other potential causes of basement flooding include burst pipes, a leaking hot water heater tank located in the basement, and sewage backup. Plumbing flooding can have serious consequences if the problem is not addressed in a timely manner.

Your House’s Location

If you live in a flooding-prone area or your house sits on a low point, you’re more likely to have a flooded basement.
